Pubs of Ulster at Stormont Closure Powers & Penalty Points

Colin Neill, Chief Executive of Pubs of Ulster outlined to the Social Development committee, chaired by Simon Hamilton, that the organisation was in support of Minister Attwood's intention to introduce powers of closure to the PSNI, and a penalty points system for repeat offenders.

However, with North Belfast publican Eugene Cassidy at his side, Mr. Neill was quick to point out that 'the devil is in the detail'. The current lack of definition regarding some of the terms used to close a premise may be concerning to Pubs of Ulster's members, but it is the belief of the organisation that the responsible licensee has nothing to fear. Mr Neill proposed working with the Minister and his Department, in order to make clear the details of the proposal, and to ensure that no responsible member of the industry was unjustly closed. Mr. Neill was keen to point out the need to self regulate, and therefore reduce the burden placed on the PSNI and the courts for resources. This was met with agreement from the entire committee.
