Pubs of Ulster Welcomes Assembly Motion on Irresponsible Drinks Promotions

04 December 2012

Speaking after the NI Assembly affirmed regulations on Irresponsible Drinks Promotions, Pubs of Ulster Chief Executive, Colin Neill said this afternoon:

This is a very welcome development today and something we’ve been working towards for many months. The forthcoming legislation will strengthen our efforts to combat irresponsible retailing of alcohol, though we believe there is even further scope for additional legislation to curb irresponsible discounting of multiple purchases in supermarkets. Another possible way of combating irresponsible retailing that we are considering is a ‘lid-levy’ such as the one currently being proposed in the Republic of Ireland.”

Duncan McCausland, Chair of the Independent Complaints Panel for the Joint Industry Code for the Responsible Promotion & Retail of Alcohol in Northern Ireland added:

“Combining legislation with the positive action that’s being taken by the drinks industry will certainly assist in a better environment being created and the curbing of irresponsible retailing of alcohol. I am looking forward to the legislation being enacted early in 2013.”
